Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza) es una mujer mentalmente desequilibrada que se obsesiona con Tayor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen), una estrella de Internet que parece tener una vida perfecta. Con el fin de ganarse la amistad de su ídolo, Ingrid deja todo atrás y se muda a la zona donde vive Taylor. Una vez allí, su comportamiento se vuelve inquietante y realmente peligroso.
La adicción a las redes sociales, que en el fondo no deja de ser una búsqueda desesperada por llamar la atención y lograr cierto reconocimiento virtual no obtenido en el mundo real, es desde hace años un fenómeno altamente preocupante. En “Ingrid goes west” vemos como ese dependencia y esa fascinanción puede mutar en acoso, destrucción personal y alteración de la realidad. Aunque Spicer añada toques de comedia negra (que a veces funcionan bien y otras no tanto), estamos ante un film de trasfondo triste y descorazonador que funciona como una especie de revisión sui generis de “El talento de Mr Ripley” bajo el filtro Instagram. Como Tom Ripley con Dickie Greenleaf, Ingrid está enfermizamente obsesionada con Taylor: compra la misma ropa, come en los mismos locales, publica posts practicamente plagiados, colecciona fotos personales de su baño y el resto de su casa, imita su forma de ser y moverse… en definitiva, que quiere convertirse en alguien como ella, ya que está profundamente enamorada de su modus vivendi. Pero a diferencia del protagonista de la novela de Patricia Highsmith, Ingrid no va tan lejos ni siente lo mismo (aunque hay una línea muy fina entre idolatrar y amar), sin embargo la obsesión y la fascinación por la figura de lo que no es (y nunca llegará a ser) es similar entre ambos films.
La película se enmarca en una estereotipada Los Ángeles, ciudad fantasma donde las haya, repleta de falsedades y calles desiertas, y que representa como ninguna otra el sueño americano con sus alegrías pero tambén con sus fracasos estrepitosos. Los personajes están construidos de forma voluntariamente superficial debido a la naturaleza 2.0 del proyecto y representan las miserias que yacen dentro de sus respectivas clases. Por un lado tenemos a Ingrid, enferma patológica en busca de nueva víctima; Taylor, la influencer del film, otra auténtica drogadicta de las redes sociales con mucha pasta y tiempo libre (una especie de pseudo nini) que tiene una necesidad imperiosa de compartir todo aquello que vive y lo guapa que cree ser; Dan, posiblemente el tipo más auténtico, simpático y genunio del barrio, lástima que se pase gran parte del día dándole al vapeador. El único que acepta a Ingrid tal y como es; Ezra, el novio de Taylor que interpreta el papel de novio perfecto y supuestamente feliz cuando en realidad está hasta las narices de su vida; y Nicky, un cocainómano cachas al más puro estilo Pocholo.
En definitiva, una historia sobre losers (todos sin excepción) cuyo final invita a la reflexión y deja caer una lectura muy sórdida del asunto: a veces para ser alguien en Internet tienes que destruirte como persona, convertirte en alguien que no eres o actuar por y para tus supuestos fans, aunque sea en perjuicio propio.

La edición se presenta en una caja simple Cervic de color azul. La carátula es el póster original de cines (y de estreno en festivales), lo cual se agradece. Decir que en España el film ha sido un direct to Blu-ray/DVD/VOD, no ha pasado por salas comerciales. Universal la ha puesto a la venta a un precio francamente atractivo: 9,99 euros.
Los estupendos menús animados con luz de neón de color rosa son una declaración de intenciones de lo que vamos a ver: una historia de obesión en los tiempos de los filtros Instagram.
La calidad de imagen es notable, con buena definición, buen color y texturas claras. Saturación correcta y niveles de negro profundos. Hay grano cinematográfico voluntario (y ahí se ha de quedar) y no se perciben errores graves de compresión ni aplicación de ningún tipo de filtro estilo DNR. En el apartado de audio tenemos una pista en inglés en calidad DTS HD 5.1 con un bitrate de 3151 kbps. El resto de pistas (entre ellas las del doblaje castellano), bastante inferiores, se presentan en un correcto DTS 5.1 a 768 kbps.
En el apartado de extras tenemos un interesante audiocomentario del director Matt Spicer, del co-guionista David Branson Smith y de la actriz protagonista Aubrey Plaza, y escenas eliminadas y alternativas (Ingrid Approaches Taylor, Naked Nicky y Table Ready, con audiocomentario opcional). Una pena que se hayan eliminado los teasers (Green Band (1 minuto 23 segundos) y Red Band (1 minuto 15 segundos)) y los Trailer (Green Band (2 minutos 22 segundos) y Red Band (2 minutos 3 segundos)) que sí incluye la edición USA. He probado de seleccionar idioma inicial de menús el inglés, para ver si ocurría algo similar a la edición UK de “Tiburón 2” en Blu-ray, ya que al hacerlo aparecían los extras (si elegías idioma castellano en el primer menú, no), pero en esta ocasión no ha habido suerte.
